Two late goals by former national striker Onandi Lowe carried Portmore United to a 2-0 triumph over Black Lions and secured a place in the quarter-finals of the St. Catherine Co-operative Credit Union/Happy Sutherland Knockout Competition at Prison Oval on Wednesday.
Lowe, who came on as a second half substitute, headed Portmore in front in the 77th minute when he calmly nodded home a Jason Morrison cross. He again showed his cleverness in front of goal in time-added-on when he neatly flicked the ball in the net from close range, leaving the Black Lions custodian as a spectator.
13th-minute penalty
Portmore missed at least 18 chances, especially in the first half when Adrian Reid's 13th-minute penalty was parried by goalkeeper Richard Forrest.
The inclusion of Onandi Lowe and Kevin Deerr in the 59th and 63rd minutes, respectively, put a punch in the Portmore attack and they were the difference in the game.
Paul Young, coach of Portmore United, said his team underestimated Black Lions and played below par but was able to put their act together in the second half.
Black Lions coach Michael Tulloch said that his team gave a "spirited performance," and it augurs well for the rest of the season.
