A woman was the victim of yet another murder with her ex-boyfriend being sought in connection with the incident.
Saturday's issue of The Star carried a lead story 'Hubby Killed Ex-lover? ... Police hunt woman's former boyfriend'. The article spoke of the murder of a St. Thomas woman, Veronica Murray. She was stabbed to death in her home.
It is alleged that Murray has an attempted rape case against her ex-boyfriend. Community residents reported seeing Telfer running from the house after hearing Murray's screams.
An incident like this brings home the fear any woman has of reporting abuses - especially sexual offences committed by loved ones. We are by no means convicting the ex-boyfriend of any of the allegations against him, but the mere allegations bring home the fear any woman in a similar situation will feel. A woman should not have to think about choosing life or death when reporting a crime committed against her.
Instead of being silenced, women should be further encouraged to report these incidents, as living with the pain of a sexual offence is much like death.
And the legal system should allow women to have the opportunity to experience some amount of justice in these instances, so they can go on with their lives.
