The third staging of the Spanish Town clean-up campaign, recently, was indeed a success though there was a low turn out of volunteers.
The event, put on by the Social Development Commission (SDC), the Kiwanis Club, the National Youth Service, the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), the Jamaica Fire Brigade and other volunteer groups, saw persons armed with shovels, machetes, brooms, paintbrushes, and other implements, cleaning and repainting pedestrian crossings and retaining walls along Burke Road, Port Henderson Road, White Church Street and other areas in the Old Capital.
When THE STAR visited, the volunteers were busy beautifying the area.
Regional Manager of the NSWMA, Charley Grant, said it is very pleasing to see the average person turning out to help.
"It augurs well for the cleanliness and civic pride of the parti-cipants, it shows that they are making a genuine effort to beautify Spanish Town and we are thankful for this," he said.
Debris
Several NSWMA trucks were seen laden with debris as a result of the clean-up and the fire brigade was on hand to clean sidewalks so they could be painted. All throughout the day's activity, the police stood guard to ensure that the law was maintained.
Persons from SDC said the
earlier postponement of the event might have led to the small turnout, but nonetheless they were thankful.
