Bridgeport hope to crack XCLR

anthony minott - Bridgeport High's Kirk Garrick (left) heads a ball away from Calabar's Cleon Brown during a Manning Cup semi-final match at the Harbour View Mini Stadium. Bridgeport High won the match 4-3 on penalties after both teams were locked 2-2 in regulation and extra time.

Bridgeport High, the 2001 ISSA/Pepsi/JN Manning Cup Champs, will once and for all want to settle a score with seven-time winners Excelsior High in today's Manning Cup final at the Harbour View Mini stadium at 3 p.m.

The two finalists will square off two hours after dethroned champs Calabar and Walker Cup winners Eltham High play off for third-place.

Bridgeport had a topsy-turvy season, losing or drawing games they should have won, or somehow getting a point they weren't looking for or winning a game when all looked lost.

Last Saturday Bridgeport proved the pundits wrong as they eliminated Calabar 4-3 on penalties when it looked like Calabar were on the verge of another final with a two-goal lead and 34 minutes remaining.

But suddenly they were hit a by Theolophelus Samuels goal to bring it to 2-1 then Andre Steele made the Bridgeport hopefuls come alive with a strike moments later to send the game into extra time.

Extra time did not change the score line, but Bridgeport looked the more confident team when spot kicks were called and took the match 4-3 on penalties. Excelsior defeated Eltham 1-0 through Desean Meek 88th-minute goal.

Excelsior defeated Bridgeport 1-0 in the 2004 Manning Cup final at Harbour View and in their latest meeting it took a solo effort by Andre Clenon to preserve a 2-2 draw against Excelsior in their second round game, so Bridgeport want to prove a point that they can beat this east Kingston school.
