It's not our job...Mayor says council not responsible for fixing P'more's major roads

Portmore Mayor George Lee says his council is not responsible for the fixing of many of the bad roads in the municipality, and has blamed the National Works Agency (NWA) for failing to repair them.

Mayor Lee also says the NWA is responsible for the major roads in Portmore and some are filled with potholes.

"The conditions of several roads in the municipality have deteriorated in recent times and we have asked the NWA to fix the Newland Road which is in a terrible state, and so far we are still waiting," said Mayor Lee.

NWA responsibility

At present, the NWA is responsible for all major roads in the municipality.

These include Passagefort Drive, Newland Road, Portmore Parkway, Braeton main road, Port Henderson, the Gregory Park main road, Hellshire main road and the Naggo Head main road. The municipality has responsibility for the other roads. And it is the pothole-filled main roads that the NWA has failed to fix that Mayor Lee is peeved about.

"The Newland road, for example has deteriorated and other roads in the area need to be addressed," said Mayor Lee.

Efforts to get a comment from the NWA was unsuccessful but works agency has so far gone about repairing at least two roads in the municipality. Earlier this year, repairs to Port Henderson road was completed and the Passagefort Drive is currently being widened.
