Carlton Bennett, a 40-year-old labourer was charged with sacrilege, several hours after he testified in church that his name was Evangelist Brown.
When Bennett appeared on November 22 in the Linstead RM. Court, several persons were shocked when investigating officer, Constable Ian Blidgen, explained that on October 29, Mr. Bennett was a part of the congregation at the Power of Faith Ministry Church in Shenton, Bog Walk, where he told a member of the church that he was Evangelist Brown and testified as to how good God was to him.
Allegations are that Bennett left the church shortly after the service and returned between 12 midnight and 1 a.m. It is alleged that he broke into the church and stole amplifiers and several appliances belonging to the church, all valuing about $70,000. Bennett then took a taxi to Bog Walk en route to Spanish Town.
It is also alleged that when the taximan reached the Bog Walk Police Station, he drove into the station and raised an alarm. Bennett was apprehended by the police.
Members of the church were called to identify the items and Bennett was subsequently charged with sacrilege after investigations revealed that he had broken into the church.
Bennett was remanded and it was revealed in court that he intended to plead guilty to the offence, but is awaiting legal representation.
He will return to court on November 30.
