A teacher doing a DJ number on the same Taxi rhythm as Buju Banton's 'Driver' in front of a group of students at the school he teaches is a strange occurrence.
One Clarendon College teacher however had no problem getting up on stage in front of his school and performing an original DJ number at the No Violence in School Tour.
Wayne Thompson, the 35-year-old school teacher with his bag slung across his shoulder, got raving applause on Thursday.
The mathematics and Spanish teacher said. "I write mostly Christian lyrics," which is in an attempt to have people turn over their lives to Christ. Therefore, when he was asked to perform he agreed.
The teacher who has been working at the school since 1996, did a song which does not yet have a title. A section of the chorus went:
"Because yuh have yuh gun, yuh tink seh yuh bad
Put down the badness or yuh wi end up inna fridge."
Thompson, who was motivated to return to his alma mater to teach, said violence has been reduced since he has been there.
"Effective punitive actions," he said was one of the contributing factors.
He believes that entertainers get too much blame for violence in the society.
"Some people say it's the entertainers and their warring behaviour. I don't believe that it's solely their fault," he said. "Family" and other societal influences also play a major role.
As to whether the No Violence School Tour can make a difference, he said he thinks of the concept that when you present to a 1000 people at least one leaves having learnt the message.
"Somebody will listen," he said.
