Ardenne High student Hakim Buchanan, is the new National Under-14 chess champion.
Buchanan finished atop the National under-14 Championship standings recently , after scoring five points from six games.
He was closely followed by Campion's Phillip Pryce who also scored five points, but was relegated to second behind Buchanan after the tiebreak system was employed. Third place and best female under-14 was Shanice Myrie of Queen's High who ended on 4.5 points.
The under -12 title was won by Brandon Badal who finished with 5.5 points, ahead of Shantel Reid on 4.5 and Stefan Richards and Taj Buckley on four points each. Reid also took the best under-12 female title.
In the under-10 competition, defending champion Tewana Mellace retained his title after scoring an impressive six points from as many games. Second place went to Andrew Folkes who scored five points, while third place and best female under-10 was taken by Tewana's younger sister Teana Mellace who finished on four points.
