IN search of their first Walker Cup title, 19-time Manning Cup champions Jamaica College (JC) became the last school to qualify for the Walker Cup quarter-finals without kicking a ball yesterday.
The Old Hope Road-based school which finished their fixture, secured their spot as the next best second-place finisher, thanks to Donald Quarrie's 3-2 win over Spanish Town, who had entered the contest needing a win to book their spot.
JC, with their 2.14 average, edged out Wolmer's (2.13) to join Norman Manley, Excelsior, Bridgeport, Waterford (best second place), Charlie Smith, Eltham and Calabar as Walker Cup qualifiers.
JC, who last won the Manning Cup in 1974, and defending champions Calabar have already secured second round places in the Manning Cup with 17 and 21 points respectively in Group E.
In other matches played yesterday, Edith Dalton James and Norman Manley played to a 1-1 draw while St. Jago and Mona also ended 1-1 in a game of academic interest.
With the draw, Norman Manley topped Group B with 24 points ahead of Spanish Town (21). Both teams have qualified for the second round.
