Outside of horseracing and the National Premier League, one of the biggest sporting events on this holiday weekend is the "Heroes of Speed" motorsport championship, which is scheduled for the Dover Raceway in St. Ann, on Monday.

"We are expecting another massive turn out," Hilary Jardine, president of the Jamaica Race Drivers Club (JRDC) told Star Sports yesterday.

At the previous meet in August, close to 4,000 patrons turned up for the Independence Day meet, which was incident free.

Monday's meet will be run in honour of Alfred Chen, a former racing driver and one of the founders of Dover Raceway.

Among some of the big names down to compete are champion GTS driver, Peter "Bull" Thompson, with his powerful RX7 Mazda, which is expected to be challenged by Doug Gore's Mitsubishi Evolution and Marck Carey's Mitsubishi Evolution One.

"My car is ready and just waiting on the wrecker to take it to Dover," said Carey, who will also be racing a Honda Civic.

In the meantime, Gore said he has done some extensive modification to his vehicle and will be coming all out to end Thompson's winning streak in the GTS series of events.

Apart from the clashes between the 'big guns', the newly-created IP 45 Class for rookies should provide some excitement for the hundreds of die-hard motorsport fans. More than 20 cars are expected to take the green flag for this event.

"We should have a very large field. These drivers are very promising and the training has been excellent," commented Christopher "Teach" McFarlane, who has been charged with the responsibility of training most of the rookie drivers.
