Illegal vending escalating

It is a disgrace that people no longer have respect for their fellow human beings and environs.

As reported in the lead story of Saturday's Star illegal vendors are leaving garbage and human waste in the environs of the Governor-General's residence.

The story stated that residents of Regal Apartments, which is nearby, are complaining that vendors who ply their wares on the roads leave pails, in which they urinate and defecate, on their premises. Additionally, they litter the sidewalks and roadways with fruit seeds and peels.

Apart from the fact that vending on the streets is illegal and the authorities should address it, if vendors had basic respect for others, the problem would not have escalated.

Disrespect is rampant, and apparently individuals need to go back to the basics. The golden rule states that should do onto others as you would have them do onto you.

Nobody wants another person selling at their gate and worst leaving rubbish behind. No one wants a stranger entering his/her premises without permission. Too many Jamaicans believe that the world owes them something and that they should be allowed to make a dollar however or wherever they please. Be it downtown or uptown, residents are entitled to live at their homes without vendors pitching a business at their gates.
