One too many wives

Dear Pastor,

Good day to you in the name of Jesus, our soon coming King. I am a married woman and I want you to help me with this problem. I am in deep trouble with my marriage. I got married in 1989 and in 1999; I found out that my husband was married before.

One day I came from work and I saw him sitting and looking at me. I asked him what was the matter and he showed me an envelope. I looked in it and I saw a divorce paper. I asked him who sent it to him and he said it was from his first wife. I asked him if he was receiving his divorce for the first time and why is it that I am hearing about it now? He told me he never knew he was married. He said it might have happened when he was drunk.

I left him for two years, but I went back to live with him. I had to leave him again because he does not speak the truth. My son wanted me to visit him in the United States. I told my husband about it and it almost cost me my life. We had a big fight and I had to go and stay with my sister. When I returned to Jamaica, I went to live on my own.

I would like to get a divorce. Please help me. Thank you very much.

V. B., St. Mary

Dear V. B.,

This man is a wicked liar! He committed bigamy. He knew he was married but he wanted you, so he fooled you. He should have been arrested and thrown in jail. I hope you have a copy of the divorce paper his wife sent to him. I also hope that you have not destroyed the certificate the marriage officer gave to you. In any case, you will have to get a certified copy from the Registrar General's Department. Go and see a lawyer. I suggest that you go to the Legal Aid Clinic. Look in the telephone directory for the number. Free yourself from this man.
