THE EDITOR, Sir:
Please permit me to use your column to ask the following questions about the safety standard I see that has existed in the St. Thomas parish capital, Morant Bay, for a very long time.
The one that strikes me most is at the end of the foot-bride, before reaching the new Mother's restaurant, at the bottom of Wharf Road. That building has been in a deplorable condition for many years.
Now, tell me, whose responsibility is it to see that the buildings in that area are kept in good condition when the owners neglect their responsibility? I may be wrong, but I believe the Parish Council is responsible. As anyone can see, the wall, and columns do not appear to be safe for people walking under them, because they could collapse at any time. It does not need a safety expert to see it poses a threat to life.
I am wondering, what keeps the scales upon the eyes of the people in the council for so long? Shame, shame. Lives are at risk, even yours, councillors, for you walk by each day, but you don't seem to take a look above as you go by. Take a good look as you pass by tomorrow.
There is an old saying 'If a stalk is pointing to the eye, do not sharpen it, root it up'. The above mentioned tells us 'time and neglect' can sharpen the danger that building poses, not only to the eyes but to the whole body as well. I thank you.
I am, etc.,
