'Ole George' sets world record

By Sacha Walters, Staff Reporter

Earl Daniel aka "Ole George" of St. Vincent completes his attempt of a world record of walking for 7 days and nights without sleep at Emancipation Park, New Kingston at 5:37pm yesterday, September, 26, 2006. - Nathaniel Stewart

Earl "Ole George" Daniel achieved the world record for the first man to walk seven consecutive days without sleep when he made his final lap around Emancipation Park yesterday.

The 43-year-old was accompanied during his last couple of laps by supporters waving different Caribbean flags.

He began walking last week Tuesday at 5:37 p.m. He ate all his meals while walking. The only breaks he took were bathroom breaks and time to change his shoes.

Aside from wanting to go down in the Guinness Book of World Records, the social worker said he did it all to make Caribbean people know they can do anything.

"I feel wonderful," Ole George said shortly after he finished. As to whether he will be going for another record, he feels confident that it is possible.

"I'm having a real difficulty knowing my limit," Ole George said. Apart from a bandage on his right knee which he received after he tripped and banged it on the fourth day of his trek, the Vincentian was in good health and good spirits.

Ole George is no stranger to this kind of success as he already set a record for walking six consecutive days without sleep. He is thinking of entering a 'last man standing competition' in St. Vincent, where individuals are given ten days to see how far they can walk, and the last man standing wins.

Vincentians who were there to support him were ecstatic. "It just goes to show how determined us Vincentians are," said Maxine Mavorn Browne a student from the University of the West Indies.

One Jamaican said Ole George's achievement is motivational."I think a Jamaican could do more days," he said laughing.
