Miss Right and Mr Wrong

When I see a big, rough and unpleasant looking monster-man profiling with a petite, elegant and beautiful lady, I remind myself that physical beauty's only skin deep. Yeah man; and I imagine that maybe the guy is beautiful deep down inside, you know, deep inside his wallet and bank book. But aside from outward appearances, have you ever wondered how come some nice girls seem to be always attracted to some not-so-nice guys? I know quite a few lovely women who are in painfully dysfunctional relationships with unworthy men. And the sad irony is that almost all of those women have a nice male friend who they confide in and complain to, and lean on, but would never get intimate with. So when they're hurt by the disreputable guy who is getting the goodies, they unload the stress on the decent guy who is not getting the goodies. Life really is unfair sometimes!

This is almost a true story:

O'Neil and Theresa are good friends. She has a five-year-old son and O'Neil knew her before the child was conceived. He is attracted to her but doesn't want to spoil the friendship. So he dreams about the possibilities while remaining her loyal and trusted friend. O'Neil's is the shoulder she cries on when her baby-father Curtis gives her a hard time. And remember, O'Neil knew and loved her long before she got involved with the baby father. O'Neil would do anything to have her. She knows how he feels because one day he finally summoned the courage and told her. He declared his love and expressed his desire for their relationship to move to another level, but she rejected him, gently. She handled it with sensitivity and compassion, but it was still a rejection. Still, he remained her friend. She met another guy called Rupert and started another relationship. They shared some intimate moments, Rupert was pressuring her to go all the way, and she wasn't ready. Well, the bastard raped her. She was devastated. And guess who was there for her? O'Neil of course! O'Neil provided counselling and support and helped her thorough the trauma as best as he could. Now, when she complains about her selfish and violent baby-father Curtis; and when she lapses into depression about the terrible episode with Rupert, O'Neil is the sensitive and caring man she talks to.

Check the scenario from O'Neil's point of view though. He is constantly hearing about two very awful men who, although they don't deserve it, they have had something that he would die for. Well, Jackass is very right about the world not being level. What incentive is there for a nice guy like O'Neil to remain decent? Would you blame him for thinking that maybe if he behaved like a dog too, he would get more satisfaction out of life? And it's not like the man is repulsive or he is a nerd or is ugly or anything. She loves him as a friend, and friends don't get the goodies!

Talk the truth, don't you notice it too? I noticed it first when I was in high school. When it came to attracting the girls, and getting the goodies, the nice guy who did well with his school work and displayed good manners and deportment could never compete with the dunce bat, delinquent ruffian who 'skull' school plenty and dress untidy (but maybe play football good!) Somehow, it seems like the good guy rarely ever gets the girl!
