APPRENTICE Carlton Malcolm looks set to be the first of the new riders to boot home a three-timer at Caymanas Park.
Malcolm, who will start the day locked on five winners with the Simpsons, Javour and Jason, could grab sole lead in the apprentice standings with victories aboard TIME OF MY LIFE in the first, SAMMY MY GIRL in the fourth and I AM NOT ORDINARY in the eighth.
Speedy TIME OF MY LIFE will have to be caught in the opening event at 1000 metres round among $420,000 claimers following his brave bid at 1300 metres a week and a half ago.
Reporting off a post-to-post win at 1100 metres on August 30, TIME OF MY LIFE led for six furlongs before being relegated to fourth close to home in an event won by BANJUHAR.
Malcolm's four-kilo claim will come in handy as TIME OF MY LIFE will carry 52.0 kilos against the likes of DEARDREAMER and SILVER PEN, who are both light and quick at 48.0 kilos each.
However, DEARDREAMER was match for TIME OF MY LIFE, when the gelding went all the way on August 30.
SILVER PEN is down-in-class and has worked well, galloping 34.4 for three furlongs on Wednesday last. However, the six-year-old American-bred mare tends to do back-up when faced with matching speed, beating mainly slower horses.
Aboard SAMMY MY GIRL, Malcolm should have a battle royal with the Simpsons in the fourth, an apprentice race (no whips) at 1100 metres.
Malcolm, who rides as light as 47.0 kilos, will partner SAMMY MY GIRL with only 48.0, a big drop in the weight for the seven-year-old mare, who carried 55.0 when beaten by the speedsters CHOO CHOO CHOO, HEAVENLY DREAMS and YYESSBABY at 1000 metres straight on August 7.
Back on the round course where she was fast catching RISING MOON at 1100 metres a month earlier, SAMMY MY GIRL should chase and catch the pair of GRETZKY and YYESSBABY, the mounts of Javour and Jason Simpson respectively.
Jackpots at $1.5 mILLION
MAMA'S GIRL at 11-1 in the third and PACKHU at 13-1 in the nightpan took out all Pick-9 bets on Saturday as no punter was good enough for even eight of nine winners, the best being 15 combinations with seven of nine, each worth $8,500.
However, there were 10 winning Super-6 tickets, each paying $95,000, meaning both bets will return to their guaranteed payouts, the Super-6 at $500,000 and the Pick-9 at $1million.
Malcolm should go all way for Super-6 and Pick-9 bettors aboard I AM NOT ORDINARY, who will carry 48.0 kilos at 1000 metres straight after finding only BLACK RIVER better at the distance last month.
The four-year-old filly had put in a poor run in her last race, beaten out of sight by SNOW PROSPECT at 1200 metres. However, it should be noted that she hardly does well on the round course and looks set to outsprint rivals at her preferred distance.
