The ISSA/Pepsi/JN daCosta Cup spotlight is focusing on Clarendon again this weekend. Glenmuir take aim at Garvey Maceo in Group I at York Town Oval and Clarendon College tackle Lennon in Group H in a game to be hosted at Brancout.
Title contenders
Both Glenmuir and Clarendon College are unbeaten and carry the bulk of interest in two zones that are favoured to produce two of the teams that many here feel, are genuine title contenders. Glenmuir have already made their statements with three decisive wins, the latest being Wednes-day's 3-0 shut-out of Kemps Hill at Brancourt.
Coach Jackie Walters thinks they were a shadow of themselves and the word for Garvey Maceo, is "you've got to watch-out." Garvey may well recall the 5-0 spanking they received last year at the competition's launch at Jarrett Park, but coach Jeffrey Hewitt prefers to remember the 0-2 loss in the return game, and also one other important factor.
"We think we have the ability to come out of the game with something," he told Star Sports.
Confidence
There is confidence in the camp following their 3-2 win over Old Harbour which took them to six points and second behind Glenmuir. "We have always played them tough in Clarendon and both teams are weaker than last year."
Over in Manchester, Zone G should have its second encounters. This zone is poorly contested with just four teams, two of which - Belair and May Day - may well have struggled in any zone across the island.
That leaves them at the mercy of DeCarteret and Manchester. DeCarteret carted May Day for 7-0 with Dean Gayle grabbing a hat-trick and Sanjay Wilson, a double.
Indications are that Belair, who scored first against Manchester before conceding three, could fare only marginally better.
With a big home-coming date against DeCarteret next Saturday, expect Manchester with coach Barry Watson to push for a big confidence booster.
