STETHS, Munro in big clash

Michael McLean, Star Writer

Two time-champions St. Elizabeth Technical and many-time winners Munro College will square off in a Zone E top-of-the-table derby in the ISSA/Pepsi/JN daCosta Cup tomorrow.

Both teams are unbeaten and overflowing with confidence going into this weekend's feature match-up.

On Wednesday, the St. Elizabeth-based schools registered similar wins against Lacovia and Newell.

STETHS, led by national under-20 representative Renario Downswell, swamped Lacovia 5-0. Downswell netted in the 30th, 35th, 74th and 90th minutes while Comar Pascoe got the other in the 54th minute. Munro whipped Newell by the same margin.

STETHS, who were champions in 1974 and 1999, look to be a very strong force this season. In their first game against Maggotty they scored nine goals on their new multi-million dollars field. Then they beat Newell 6-0. The Kurt Brooks-coached team has scored 20 goals in the 2006 competition.

Star striker Downswell, son of former national technical director Wendell Downswell, leads the goalscoring tally with nine goals while Pascoe has found the net eight times.

"I am grateful for the games we have won so far, but I just want the team to play a bit more disciplined, especially in front of the goal," said coach Brooks.

Over the past two seasons, STETHS have been in a rebuilding phase and competed in the local parish leagues where they won division two and division one to reach the Wray and Nephew Major League.
