Bet on Sankofa

by Jimmie, Star Racing Writer

TRAINER Colin Blair's SANKOFA has it all to do, but should defy the handicaps and win tomorrow's 1600-metre Mark Twain Trophy in a rematch with Philip Feanny's MYLEGACY.

SANKOFA won handsomely at 1400 metres on August 1, beating 1-2 favourite MYLEGACY into fourth place.

However, a shrewd Feanny has called up four-kilo claiming apprentice Carlton Malcolm to partner MYLEGACY, who rebounded from her four-length loss with an impressive victory at 1300 metres three weeks later.

Malcolm's claim will have MYLEGACY carrying 48.0 kilos, giving her an 18-pound swing in the scale against SANKOFA, to be ridden by veteran Richie Robertson at 54.0 kilos.

The handicaps certainly suggest MYLEGACY should turn the table on SANKOFA, but Blair's gelding faced far better horses in his follow-up race, a third-place run-up in class behind American-bred runners FOUND IN THE MIST and COMMANDING LIGHT.

Denied second by a half-length at 1500 metres, SANKOFA's effort was franked a week later by runner-up COMMANDING LIGHT, who returned to win at six furlongs, beating BANKER'S BULLLION and ASIA WINTER.

Although MYLEGACY won the same day, she did so among non-winners-of-two, beating up on DIAL DIRECT, who is a far a far cry from the likes of COMMANDING LIGHT.

In addition, SANKOFA, a gelding, is improving and won with much authority when slamming the filly, MYLEGACY, back in August.

Jackpots at $1.5m

PETITE DIVA and SKYWAY EXPRESS, both at 5-1, along with 4-1 chance, MARKET DAZZLE, were mild Pick-9 upsetters on Wednesday, resulting in three winning tickets, each worth a grand $930,717.

The Super-6 was also caught, yielding 78 winning combinations, each paying $11,686. There was also a big Hi-Five payout of $45,053 in the 10th race.

The Pick-9 returns to its $1m guarantee along with the Super-6 at $500,000 on what appears to be a tricky afternoon with most races having one or two live shots.

Bankers will be key and SIR KNIGHT should land the third race at 1300 metres among $200,000 claimers. The five-year-old gelding won down in class at the level when claimed by Albert Chong on June 21 and has been pointed to a winning return among weaker horses.

Both Super-6 and Pick-9 players can look to the trio of SIR KHAN, EXCLUSIVE RUNNER and CHOO CHOO CHOO to sweep the last three races.

SIR KHAN finished third in Wednesday's Cecil C. Charlton feature race behind BANJUHAR and LE CHIC at top level claiming and will be tough to beat a rung down the ladder.

EXCLUSIVE RUNNER has worked too well to be beaten and CHOO CHOO CHOO won't be caught at 1000 metres straight in the nightpan.
