Dear Pastor
As my retirement years come upon me suddenly, I hope I could come home again to Jamaica. Jamaica, my sweet Jamaica. I have two young and sweet granddaughters, 9 and 5 years old, and for the first time in my life I am afraid for them. I could contribute so much, spiritually and financially. After all this time, I finally understand Claude McKay's disconnect from a land no longer mine.
What do you think?
J. W., California USA
Dear J. W.,
I think you are trying to say that you would rather retire in Jamaica, the country you love so very much but you are very concerned about your grandchildren and that you are also wondering whether you can adjust to the Jamaica you have not lived in for many years. You are going to miss your friends, children and grandchildren who are in North America. Your lifestyle will not be the same in Jamaica.
I have a word of encouragement for you, thousands of Jamaicans who have lived abroad have returned to the land of their birth and are doing well. Many travel from time to time to visit their children and friends who are abroad and you can do the same when you return home. I know you feel that you can make a contribution in the life of your grandchildren but you are not directly responsible for them. They can visit you wherever you are. I hope you understand what I am trying to say.
You mentioned that retirement has come upon you suddenly, do not worry about that. Sometimes when people are very busy they do not think about getting old. Evidently you have lived a full life. Give God praise. Let no one discourage you from returning to Jamaica.
