Caring for pedestrians

The Editor, Sir:

I would really like Jamaica National to help me find a way. For almost a decade now I have been trying to get reluctant authorities to place a proper pedestrian crossing on Duke Street near Pitt Street in Falmouth, Trelawny. How can Jamaica National help as the "new kid" in town?

The crossing has been in a poor state for many years. After investigation and pleading I have come to the conclusion that no one really cares about the pedestrians.

Clearly the persons in charge at the Falmouth All Age and Falmouth Infant School must be concerned. So many children from these schools use the crossing on a daily basis. Many motorists using that section of Duke Street don't know that a pedestrian crossing is on that piece of roadway.

I'm also calling on the Hon. Maxine Henry Wilson to mobilise her education officer for the area to start working with the schools and business places for greater and more sustained support for the educational institutions in and around Falmouth. If the parents don't support the businesses in Falmouth the owners will have to close their doors so it would be in their best interest to support the children of the community.

I am, etc.,

Hugh Anderson Blair.
