Getting your tenant to pay

There is more than $200,000 owing to a landlord over the last two years because a tenant has refused to pay him.

The landlord disclosed that the tenant told him several times that he was not paying him and there was nothing the landlord could do about it.

"I have a tenant living at my premises since 2004 and he is giving me a very hard time to collect my rent," the landlord said.

"When he came to rent a two -bedroom cottage on my premises, he appeared to be a very nice person. I asked him where he worked and he told me and I called his workplace to confirm.

"He paid the first three months' rent but after that he began giving me hard luck stories. I told him I did not appreciate how he was handling the matter but at first he told me I would soon get the rent.

"He did not make the payments and I asked him several times last year what was the problem and he said that I had a house already and he had to save to buy one. I told him that when I used to rent a house I made sure that the rent was paid because I could not live outside.

shocking

"This is really shocking to me because in January of this year I asked him what plans he was making to pay me the $200,000 owing so far for rent and he told me that he was not paying any rent and there was nothing I could do about it. I think he was very rude to tell me that. I think he is treating me this way because I am a senior citizen and all my children live abroad. When I told him to leave the premises he said he would do so one of these days.

"I don't think I can handle the matter to take him to court and that is the reason he is behaving like this," the senior citizen said.

If you are having difficulty taking the matter to court you can appoint an agent to serve him notice to quit the premises. The agent or a lawyer can sue him on your behalf to recover the amount owing for rent.
