There have been at least five cases where children have died as a result of crossfire between rival gangs for the period of January 2004 to December 2005.

Among those who have been killed in the last two years in gun crossfire are Oksana Douglas, Devonte Lawla, Toni-Ann Thomas, Quwayne Ross and Shantel Miller.

Of this number, two were drive-by shootings.

In January 2004, Devonte Lawla, three, was shot and killed along with another man as he stood near his home in the Kingston 11 area. The police report that the youngster's relative did not send him to school that day because she had no money. The boy was reportedly playing on the road when the incident occurred. Two men were arrested in connection with the murder.

In another incident in June last year, Toni-Ann Thomas, two, was playing with her father after having dinner when the men from Flinch Crescent reportedly opened fire on her York Avenue home. The youngster was hit in the back and her father injured. Since then, although the area has not experienced much violence, residents say the communities are still at odds with each other. Toni-Ann's murder remains unsolved.

Later that same month, 11-year-old Shantel Miller was shot and killed while at home with her uncle. The girl was reportedly asleep when men fired several shots at the house. She died on the spot. A suspect who was being sought in connection with her death was killed earlier this year by gunmen.

In October last year, three-month-old Quwayne Ross was shot and killed while being carried by his mother in the Mountain View area of East Kingston. The police said Ross was accidentally hit as the bullet was meant for another relative who was nearby. A man was later arrested and charged for his murder.

And late last year, Oksana Douglas was shot and killed during a drive-by in the Olympic Gardens area. The girl was on her way from a party when the incident occurred. One of the suspects was later arrested and charged while another was killed in a shoot-out.
