Thirteen-year-old Kacean Cohen is being prayed for by the leaders of the Sanguinetti New Testament Church during her rededication ceremony on August 19. - George Henry
spaldings, clarendon:
It's not very often that one hears of an individual who has been christened on two occasions. Well, that was the case at the Sanguinetti New Testament Church of God on August 19 when 13-year-old Kacean Cohen was taken to the altar by her mother, Kavis Thompson, to be rededicated.
It was a surprise to many who were in attendance at church that morning to see the beautiful teenager being christened by Reverend Barrington DaCosta, the pastor of the church. One is accustomed to seeing parents and godparents taking their children to church to be dedicated to God. And, to see Kacean walking to the altar instead of being held in her mother's arms, caused many persons in the congregation to smile.
eyes opened
Kacean was very serious when she went to the altar. When Rev. DaCosta asked the officers in the church to surround her and offer prayers to God on her behalf, the teenager had her eyes wide open, as if she was wondering what she was doing here for a second time.
Her mother Kavis, told the THE STAR Kacean was not being christened for the first time but had been blessed at the same church by its former pastor Reverend Samuel H. Thomas when she was an infant.
However, according to Thompson, she was forced to do the ceremony again, because she wanted a christening certificate to do some business for her daughter and the first certificate could not be found.
Asked how she felt about having to rededicate her daughter, Thompson said the ceremony was basically the same. She, however, added that this time around, her daughter was able to fully understand what was happening, as opposed to when she was a baby.
Kacean, who was born on January 30, 1993, at the Percy Junor Hospital in Spaldings, told THE STAR that when she went to the altar to be rededicated she felt shy. Kacean said she was afraid because she did not want her friends to make jokes about her and to say that she was too old to be christened.
Although her friends called her 'big baby' at the end of the ceremony, Kacean said she now feels good, as she had no difficulty with the act that was performed in her honour to God.
Kacean, who wants to be a nurse, plans to work harder this year as she keeps her eyes focused on her goal in working in the nursing profession. She is the seventh person to be dedicated to God at the church since the start of this year.
