The Kingston Central police are searching for the mother of a two-day-old infant whose body was found dumped at the intersection of Matthews Lane and Port Royal Street in downtown, yesterday.
The body of the baby boy was found wrapped in a plastic bag about 8:15 a.m. The police and a pathologist were called and an on-the-spot post-mortem revealed that the infant had died from "blunt force injuries to the head."
The police are unsure of the mother's address, and are not certain if she is from any of the surrounding communities. Residents of the nearby Water Lane community, however, are confident that none among them would commit such an act.
When THE STAR visited the community, several residents admitted to hearing about the incident and a few said they had viewed the infant's lifeless body. All had an opinion on how the mother should be dealt with, and none were willing to even think that the child could have been killed by someone other than its mother.
One 11-year-old boy who says he viewed the body, told THE STAR: "Mi see di baby. Im have a stab inna im back and a pure beating mi see pan him. Mi see some tings like belt mark or hand print. Da mother deh fi get beat up and torture. She too cruel!"
Another resident, Marci, who has lived in the community for four years, said: "Mi hear dem a talk bout it, but mi never go. Mi nuh like dem tings deh. Mi feel seh is di mother, cause if a never she, it woulda report to the police. It easier she did have di baby and lef it pan somebody step." She also added that no mother should be forced to such actions as "whether support or not, how she carry im fi 9 months? Dat a di hardest part, from di baby born and reach three months, im all right."
She admitted that it was not unusual for the bodies of grown men to be dumped by the road, but said, "A di first mi a hear nothin bout baby inna di area." The residents say the body was taken there by someone outside of the community and dumped there.
Lyn, another resident, said: "Mi hear seh a di rubbish truck man find him. Nobody from di area wouldn't do that. Mi know all di pregnant woman dem from di area, and dem wouldn't do it. Dem dash it weh cause nobody nuh live dung deh. Da lady deh cruel. Mi nuh know how she sleep."
The police are asking those who may have information about the child's mother to come forward. They say she could be charged with either murder or concealment of birth.
