Tri-series to prepare Windies for Champions Trophy

Brian Lara - File

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (AP)

Captain Brian Lara said West Indies was keen to see how it measured against Australia and India in the DLF tri-series in Malaysia this month.

"We have to be realistic," Lara said before the team left the Caribbean yesterday.

"We are playing against two of the best teams in the world. We had some success against India earlier in the year and that has us in a positive frame of mind. We know that they are a formidable opponent.

"Australia is the strongest team in the game and they will be tough competition as well. We are a team that is very excited about the prospects of taking on both of them. We will be looking to the future as we go to Malaysia."

The tri-series at Kinrara Oval in Kuala Lumpur runs from Sep-tember 12-24.

West Indies beat India 4-1 in a home one-day series in May, and hasn't met Australia since January 2005, when Australia swept them in the VB tri-series with Pakistan.

Lara said West Indies will have a camp in Malaysia after the DLF Cup before moving on to India for its Champions Trophy defence.

"With our recent success in the one-day games, that has raised the level of belief and confidence in the team, and we will be looking forward to it. We will look at what we have been doing well, dissect it, and look at doing it again."
