Gang-related cases harder to solve

( L - R ) Oksana Douglas and Sasha-Kaye Brown

As part of the hunt for child killers, today THE STAR continues its series geared towards informing the public about the unsolved murders.

Although it is easier to solve one-on-one murders, the breakthrough in THE STAR's Hunt for Child Killers Campaign has come in an unlikely case.

In a recent interview, coordinator for Crime Stop, Prudence Gentles, said success in murder cases rarely came from those which were gang related.

drive-by shooting

But, the breakthrough came with the police making an arrest in the death of Oksana Douglas who was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting.

Of the nine unsolved child murders, five are as a result of gang violence. Jovaughn Williams was killed along with his mother in Rose Heights, St. James in 2004. The 11-year-old boy and his mother were on their way home when it happened.

In July 2005, Nicholas Baker was killed by men in the Chinese Cemetery, St. Andrew, after he failed to hide a gun he had been given to transport. The youngster had used the weapon to kill a 14-year-old girl a few hours before. Toni-Ann Thomas was also killed in gang violence on Yorke Avenue in June 2005.

Later in the year, Sasha-Kaye Brown was burnt to death after men threw Molotov cocktail bombs on her house. The 10-year-old, along with her grandparents and an aunt, were killed in that incident. In December, Oksana Douglas was killed during a drive-by shooting.

Of all the murders, Oksana's was seen as one of the most difficult to solve. But, it has happened.

On Wednesday, Prudence Gentles of Crime Stop, said she was surprised that they made a breakthrough.

"I was surprised that it was this case, because it's a case of a drive-by shooting that we think is gang related," she said. "I'm pleasantly surprised."

Oksana's murder was solved last month when the police arrested and charged Oniel Hammond otherwise called 'Golas'. Two other suspects remain at large.
