Dancehall king takes a queen

Barbara Ellington, Lifestyle Editor

Dancehall king Beenie Man shares an emotional moment with his 'Queen' D'Angel during their wedding. - Winston Sill

For the more than 250 guests who attended the much talked-about wedding of top DJ Moses Davis ('Dr.' Beenie Man) and his lady love Michelle Downer (D'Angel), yesterday, there were many anxious moments. Scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m., the ceremony did not begin until 6:25 p.m. as both bride and groom arrived late.

Officiated by Rev. Al Miller, the ceremony took place at the lush Creighton Estate property in St. Andrew. It was a venue kept secret for over a week after press leaks elsewhere in the media had told all details of the previous location.

But following his own late arrival, the anxious groom did not sit patiently like others do. He paraded up and down the cream carpeted, petal strewn aisle, greeting, back-slapping, high-fiving and hugging family and friends. The altar and white chairs were beautifully arranged and the couples' signature white and silver colour theme included huge angel cut-outs and masses of white carnations and lilies on top of lace-trimmed columns.

And as the moment dragged on, eliciting much laughter, at 5:30 p. m. Beenie Man went to the microphone and loudly enquired, "Anybody see mi wife; anybody see a brown pregnant girl with red hair?" It was priceless. He did so again at 6:05 p.m., this time he asked, "Anybody si mi wife?"

Meanwhile, anxious guests got up to be refreshed and to ask whether the nuptials would still be legal after the 6:00 p.m. hour had passed. Children fidgeted and a small crowd gathered to wait for the big event. Then, it was heard, more squeals of delight; the mento band struck up the wedding march and D'Angel arrived at 6:15 p.m. looking so fabulous everyone forgot to be upset with her and instead cheered her on to meet her groom.

Her white strapless Mary's Incorporated gown with fitted, beaded bodice which dipped below the waist and ended in a flowing skirt, ended in a cathedral train. It was complemented by a matching tulle veil, cinched in position by a jewelled tiara. 'Beenie Man' white Gucci tuxedo and white shoes were teamed with a black and silver vest and matching bow tie. D'Angel carried a bouquet of white rosebuds that carried the floral theme excellently executed by Ann-Marie Weiss.

During the vows, The DJ was on a roll as he ad-libbed the lines and when Rev. Miller asked the crucial question replied, "I sincerely will," "I absolutely will," "I do."

The reception area was magnificently laid out under white tents that bore crystal chandeliers and garlands of orchids suspended from the ceiling. Guests would later dance on a lit dance floor to the sounds of Gumption Band.

But not before feasting on the scrumptious fare laid out by Pantry Caterers' Karl Hart and his team, Selena Wong's fabulous five-tiered wedding cake and with libations by Wray and Nephew.
