Based on the statistics, more girls were killed in 2005 than boys.
For 2005, the police report that 20 children 15 years old and under were murdered. Of this total, 11 were girls who were murdered under different circum-stances. Interestingly, the number of girls killed in 2005 is 10 more than 2004 when just one was killed out of a number of 15 murdered children.
Family feud
The first incident to involve girls for 2005 took place in January when Shadece Williams, four, and her sister 13-year-old Stacy-ann Gardener were stabbed to death allegedly by a relative.
In May, six-year-old Shanika Anderson was found raped and murdered in an open lot behind Manley Meadows in east Kingston. When she was found, Shanika had bruises to the back of her head, back and vagina.
In June, two-year-old Toni-Ann Thomas was shot and killed as she stood in her York Avenue house with her father. She was reportedly shot and killed by men on Flinch Crescent after her community was sprayed with bullets.
Later that month, Shantel Miller, 11, was also shot dead after gunmen invaded her community and sprayed her house with bullets killing her grandfather and uncle in the process. And a few days later, the bodies of Sheneca Shakes, eight and nine-year-old Shauna-Kay Legister were found after they were raped and murdered in Westmoreland.
Teen murderer
The month of July did not end the bloodshed as 14-year-old Shana-Kay Brown was shot and killed by 13-year-old Nicholas Baker. The police report that the girl was at home when the boy came in her yard armed with a gun. She was getting up to call her mother when she was shot and killed.
Seven-year-old Shaneal Raffington's death was the highlight for August. The child was shot as she made her way home with her grandmother while on her way from church.
In October, Sasha-Kaye Brown was burnt to death along with her grandparents while in December, Oksana Douglas was killed during a drive-by shooting.
It should be noted that of the 11 murders, five are still unsolved as the police recently arrested and charged a man in connection with the death of Oksana Douglas. The killers for the other girls remain at large.
