The lead story in Monday's Gleaner reported that a Jamaican-born terrorist is to be deported to the island within a few weeks.
According to the story, the man is believed to have influenced at least one of the July 7 bombers in London. The man, Shiek Abdullah El-Faisal, was jailed in 2003 for nine years, which was reduced to seven years on appeal. He was charged for soliciting murder and inciting racial hatred.
From the story, one can deduce that the man was widely known as a teacher of hatred. Jamaica is a small developing nation with few resources to monitor terrorists and for this reason it is urgent that we get help to deal with him.
There is also the fact that the ICC Cricket World Cup is just around the corner and will involve the country hosting an international event with people from all over the nation. Having this man here will put us at even greater risk.
The situation is made worse when one considers that according to the story, Senator Delano Franklyn, State Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade said that he was not aware that El-Faisal would be deported to Jamaica. It also appears that no strategy has been discussed yet on how to deal with having him here. The Government needs to have measures in place to ensure that they monitor him to ensure that he does not carry out any other life-threatening crimes.
