Reach Falls set to flow again

After being closed for approximately two years, plans are finally afoot to re-open the Reach Falls in Portland.

Once a popular tourist attraction, the falls closed after running into some operational snags.

According to a release from the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) the developers at the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) have stated that the falls is scheduled to be reopened in November.

The National Land Agency recently acquired the property and the repairs will be effected through an agreement signed with the UDC.

The renovation of the attraction will take place in two phases. It is expected that come November, the attraction will have proper lighting, potable water, telephone service, a proper sewage disposal system and that the existing facilities will be refurbished. River trails and picnic areas are also to be added to the landscape and the compound will also be fenced.

The intermediate phase of the repair is expected to be completed by the start of the winter tourist season, and will include the construction of a road to the facility, the building of additional parking facilities, the refurbishing of bathrooms, the construction of life guard booths and the procurement of a container for temporary office space and first aid service.

The first phase will start after the completion of the intermediate phase and will include the building of an arrival centre, the construction of a permanent administrative block, a souvenir shop, food and beverage huts and a craft and sculpture hut.
