A woman constable from the Jamaica Constabulary Force's Protective Services Division, was shot and injured yesterday, at her home in Washington Gardens, St. Andrew.
Reports are that about 12:15 p.m., the officer was at the rear of her premises removing some clothes from her line, when a armed man surprised her.
He ordered her into her house, and demanded money. When his demands were not met, he forced her into the bedroom.
Unknown to the robber though, the woman constable had her service firearm in her bedroom.
She attempted to access the weapon, when a struggle ensued between them. During the fight, the man shot the woman constable in her left leg, wherein she dropped the weapon.
Stable condition
The man took the service weapon, and made a successful escape on foot. The officer was taken to hospital, where she was admitted in stable condition.
Police conducted an immediate search of the area, but neither the robber nor the weapon were found.
Intelligence gathered however, suggested that a man fitting the robber's description was seen running toward a squatter settlement in the area called 'Gully Bank.'
Police say the area has been plagued with robberies recently, and have surmised from several complaints from residents, that the 'Gully Bank' area may be harbouring these criminals.
"We are getting several calls from residents complaining about the Gully Bank area...they have written to the parish council on many occasions, and we cannot do anything in terms of removal without their approval," explained a senior officer at the Hunts Bay Police Station.
