At least 10 Jamaicans are on the major wanted lists of several United States authorities for offences ranging from murder to drug trafficking STAR checks have shown.
The list of 10 Jamaicans include two women, one of whom has been wanted for criminally negligent homicide since 1993. The list of persons wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), The United States Marshals and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) are: Ena McNeish, Dwight Williams, Rohan Forrester, Dennis Jones, Sean Gayle, Winston Mills, Roland Williams, Winston Mason, Danavon and Pauline Richards.
While the Jamaicans are present on the list they do not dominate it, and for all three agencies, none are in the top 10. On the FBI most wanted list, Osama bin Laden sits firmly at the top with a US$27 million ($1.782 billion) price tag on his head.
The DEA and US Marshal's lists are dominated by Mexicans and United States citizens.
Major case
In the case of McNeish, the United States Marshals has described it as major.
The 54-year-old woman who goes by the aliases Ena Mae Jones, Ena Mae Walcott, Ena Mae Highgate and Ena Mae Taylor has been wanted since 1993 for criminally negligent homicide and possession of a controlled substance in the first degree. During the incident, McNeish allegedly passed a tractor trailer in a no passing zone and hit another vehicle head-on. The driver of the other vehicle died. A large quantity of narcotics were reportedly discovered taped to McNeish's body at the hospital. McNeish is said to have escaped from the hospital despite her injuries and has been a fugitive ever since. She is said to have strong ties to New York City and Atlanta, Georgia.
Dwight S. Williams is wanted by the FBI for drug charges and money laundering. The FBI said between 1997-1998, Williams was allegedly involved in a large-scale drug conspiracy and distribution network which originated from the San Diego, California, area. He was indicted federally on December 14, 2000, by the United States District Court, Western District of Missouri, for conspiracy to possess and distribute controlled substances and money laundering. Additionally, a federal arrest warrant was issued on the above date.
The list of wanted persons does not end there. Rohan Forrester is said to be wanted for marijuana trafficking. The DEA said Forrester is from Jamaica but has addresses in Miami and California.
The DEA is also hunting for Dennis Erlando Jones who has Waltham Park Road and Kingston 2 addresses. He is wanted in Michigan. His list of sins is said to include conspiracy to possess cocaine and conspiracy to distribute cocaine.
Sean Anthony Gayle and Winston Dewayne Mills are wanted for Federal Drug violations. Both are being sought to answer to conspiracy to distribute marijuana charges. However, Mills has additional charges of conspiracy to possess marijuana and money laundering charges.
Mason and Clayton are also wanted on conspiracy to possess and distribute marijuana. But, the DEA is also looking for Mason to answer charges of engaging in a continual criminal enterprise.
Richards, the other female in the group is wanted for allegedly conspiring to distribute more than 1,000 kilograms(2,200 lbs) of marijuana. While Roland George is wanted for conspiracy to possess and distribute marijuana and engaging in a criminal enterprise.
Meanwhile local police authorities could not say if any of the persons on the United States list are wanted locally.
"What I can say is we have a responsibility to track down and arrest persons who are wanted internationally. The information as to whether or not they are being sought locally is one which we cannot disclose," said head of Organised Crime Superintendent Devon Watkiss.
The DEA has listed the wanted persons as being armed and dangerous and has encouraged the public to call their local authorities if they see any of these persons.
Efforts to find the number of Jamaicans in United States jails and prisons proved difficult as they were not readily available.
