A police officer who has been serving in the force for seven years was alleged to have been found with 29.5 kgs of marijuana in the trunk of his Toyota Corolla motor car.
Twenty-nine-year-old Phillip Boothe, from the Lionel Town Police Station, was charged with possession, dealing and trafficking marijuana. It is alleged that on Sunday at approximately 9:30 p.m. he was stopped by a mobile patrol in the vicinity of the Horizon Remand Centre. The officer conducting the check, identified himself and said that he could smell marijuana in the car.
Boothe informed the police that he was a fellow officer and took the keys from the ignition and opened the trunk where it is alleged that three black plastic bags with the drugs were found.
Dwight Reece, Boothe's lawyer, told the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court that his client had loaned his car to someone and had only got it back a half of an hour before he was stopped.
Reece made an application for bail on the basis that his client is innocent and had opened the trunk without any hesitation.
He was, however, remanded in custody until Tuesday giving the arresting officer time to appear in court.
