WELL THE PORTMORE toll road is finally open and the story is coming to an interesting conclusion, My Friend P thinks. Some of the protesting residents are supposedly staging a boycott.
A nonsensical boycott, it would seem - since the only people really being hurt are the people protesting. That is right, they have opted to spend extra time counting the dashed lines in the centre of the road while enjoying the comfort of their cars in miles and miles of traffic on the Mandela Highway.
The owners of the toll road are quite fine. Robert Pickersgill and his family are even more fine - he lives on the other side of the Portmore toll road and has no real reason to use it apart from when he is making his occasional visits to his constituency. And the rest of Government? What the hell, they really could not give two hoots about the Portmore folk until the next election arrives.
We wonder what is the point of the boycott that they have announced. Will it end when school reopens? We wonder why did they have to wait for the road to open to take this protest action? They could have been doing this for the past six months if they really wanted to make a point - a point that we clearly have missed.
This talk about the Causeway being nearly like hallowed ground for the residents of Portmore is quite disturbing. The last time I checked the Causeway did not appear to be a cul-de-sac or a dead-end roadway. The Causeway connects the Corporate Area to a number of other worthy parishes in the country where numerous people live in places they think of as home.
POPPYCOCK!
And when these non-Portmore-ites use this toll road they are going home just like the residents of Portmore are doing. So all of this Portmore talk about being charged a fee to go home is all a load of poppycock. People who are on the road are either going home or doing some sort of business. The trek on the toll road is of worth to anyone who values time and sees merit in avoiding the stress and agony of languishing in traffic.
The last time I wrote about the toll road I did indeed get a tongue-lashing from Portmore people. I hope I am not in for that diatribe again.
I seriously have only but one beef - why is there a special concession for frequent Portmore toll users? What about the people using other sections of the toll road frequently, don't they deserve a concessionary rate for frequent use, or do they need to give a Portmore address?
