WICB to probe Lara's comments

West Indies captain Brian Lara. - FILE

BRIDGETOWN (CMC):

A COMMITTEE HAS been set up by the West Indies Cricket Board to investigate comments made by captain Brian Lara after the final Test against India at Sabina Park last month.

The WICB announced Saturday that the committee would be headed by President Ken Gordon, and comprise Sir Alister McIntyre, Clive Lloyd and Gregory Shillingford.

A board release said the committee would be charged with investigating "all matters relating to Mr Lara's statements and to take such action as they may consider appropriate after these matters are discussed with him".

Following the Sabina Park Test which the West Indies lost by 49 runs, Lara criticised the selection policy and the nature of the pitch, arguing the latter was more suited to the visiting team.

Lara, who was only elevated to the post as skipper in April, also said he would consider quitting the post but would await the naming of the new selection panel before making a decision

At a WICB directors meeting on Thursday in Barbados, fast bowling legend Andy Roberts was appointed to the selection panel, replacing former Convenor Joey Carew who did not seek nomination.

Former Test off-spinner Clyde Butts and batting great Gordon Greenidge were reappointed.

In a stunning revelation after the Sabina Park Test, Lara said he had found out a few days before the start of the game that he had been made a selector in May.

Lara had earlier said he believed the captain should be made a selector, even as he called for changes to the team composition in order to bolster its attack.

Sir Alister and Lloyd were both this week elected as non-member directors, following amendments to the WICB constitution.

The committee is expected to meet with Lara within the next two weeks as he is currently overseas on business.
