THE THIRD STAGING of the JFF/Red Stripe Light Beach Futbol tournament has brought with it several changes from the previous two years.
The main change is the location. The tournament has moved to Hellshire Beach Club, next door to Hellshire Beach, the original venue.
"With this new location we have much more space for the fans and for the playing area, and the quality of the sand is better," said Carlo Redwood, marketing manager for beers at Red Stripe, yesterday during the first round of matches.
The private property also offers more freedom of movement for the beach futbol fans as it is separated from the public beach.
This year's tournament has also been extended from four to six weeks and the number of teams competing has been increased from 16 to 18.
Fans are incorporated in the event by interactive games such as Wacky World Cup. Seven patrons take penalty kicks while the goalkeeper tries to maintain his balance on a mat soaked with liquid soap.
One thing that has remained is the participation of an international team. A Brazilian contingent, which includes former World Cup player Careca, will play in the final round on August 26 and 27 with the top three local teams. "We looked for one of the best Brazilian teams we could find to be here and some of the guys on this team are the originators of the Beach futbol tournament," Redwood said.
