The glass chariot carrying the casket of the late Christine Hewitt leaves the Holy Trinity Cathedral - JUNIOR DOWIE PHOTOS
ONLOOKERS AND SOME of the mourners who gathered to pay their last respects to public relations practitioner, Christine Hewitt were disappointed with the turn-out of political and music industry personalities.
The service was held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral on Saturday afternoon. Some complained that Hewitt gave much in life and more celebrities should have come to celebrate this in her death.
"Is a disgrace the amount of people who come. Di woman do so much, dem should come pay dem respects," one mourner said.
But not all stayed away from the short service. Minister of Information Collin Campbell, Lady G and former Dancehall Queen, Carlene, were among the dozens of people who turned out for the service.
Most mourners followed the family's request to wear bright cheerful colours. This blended well with the several red, white and yellow balloons which decorated the church. Bouquets with colourful carnations also helped to brighten the event.
The crowd which gathered was happy to see the casket arrive although it did at minutes to 1:00 p.m, almost an hour later than the scheduled start. "Remember this is a church," one usher promptly reminded the gathering who started to cheer and shout as the casket pulled behind a white F150 truck arrived at the church.
"Yes lady wi know seh a church but a Christine come," one onlooker remarked.
Following arguments and several near fights for the programmes, the service eventually started and lasted for slighty over an hour.
Family members, except her husband and friends, mostly participated in the ceremony. Included were her close sister Dacia Hewitt who read a remembrance and another sister Carol Peterson Lawrence, who sang one of Christine's favourite songs.
In the homily, Reverend Father Kenneth Richards reminded the congregation to be selfless. He also noted that Christine was a generous person who often sponsored treats and helped those in need.
The colourful casket which was draped in a white cloth with red bandana plaid stitched in the middle and at the edges was sprinkled with water and incense as the final farewell was performed signalling the end of the service.
After being ushered outside family members hugged each other and cried. The entourage quickly lined up and a white convertible BMW with top down lead the way out of the church yard.
This was followed by the F150 pulling the glass chariot carrying the casket and a black F150 truck also pulling a glass chariot with the wreaths. Family members followed behind in a white stretch limousine to Dovecot where the body was laid to rest.
The Brite Lite Limousine and F150 chariot rolled into Dovecot at about 3:20 p.m. As it drew up one person who was anticipating a large crowd commented; "A Christine funeral dis, but nobody no come more dan so. I believe more people woulda turn out afta di woman do so much good."
However, even with the small number of persons that turned out there was love shown for the late Hewitt. Her body was laid to rest close to the burial spot of the late Bogle.
