The police are reporting that of the 20 children that were murdered in 2005, only eight remain unsolved. And these eight are among the nine children whose death THE STAR, the families of the youngsters and the public would like to see closed.
The ages of the children killed in 2005 ranged from a few weeks old to 13 years old.
Like most of the other murders in Jamaica, the gun accounted for most of the deaths. Of the 20 murders 13 were by the gun, the knife was responsible for three, three were raped and killed and one was burnt to death.
The children who died by the gun include: Rodaine Powell, three, who was murdered along with his mother and brother in October last year. Quwayne Ross who died in his mother's arms on Jacques Road in late September; Shantel Miller 11, who was killed along with her grandfather and uncle in Spanish Town, St. Catherine in June and Toni-Ann Thomas who died in the same month.
Other deaths by the gun include that of Shauna-Kay Brown, 14, who was killed by 13-year-old Nicholas Baker while at her home. Baker was later killed by gunmen. Nine-year-old Tevin Parchment was also killed by gunmen along with his sister. Oksana Douglas, Maurice Maxwell, Shaneal Raffington, Zidane Linton and Dwight Robinson were also killed by gunmen.
The three killed by the knife were Shadece Williams, four, Stacy-ann Gardener,13, and Dwayne Davidson, 15, who were allegedly murdered by their uncle in Kilancholly, St. Mary last year while Sasha-Kaye Brown 10, was burnt to death along with her family.
Sheneca Shakes, Shauna-Kay Legister and Shanika Anderson were the three who were raped and killed. These three deaths along with those of Sasha-Kaye Brown, Maurice Maxwell, Oksana Douglas, Nicholas Baker and Toni-Ann Thomas remain unsolved.
