THERE WAS A story in THE WEEKEND STAR which showed the police in a very pleasant light. The story headlined 'Angels in blue save lady,' described how the officers of Bull Bay, St. Andrew, rebuilt the home of a 90-year-old resident of their community.
According to the story, the house which was in a poor condition, got worse after the hurricanes, and so the officers decided to take it on as a project.
The story also noted that the officers and the youth club took on the project and have gone much further than planned. They intend to tile and paint the inside and bring food and money every two weeks for the woman.
While police officers were very helpful they have definitely made an impact on the community. As the officer in charge said, the community will certainly trust them more and feel more comfortable talking to them about criminal matters because they have done something which makes people recognise that they are human too.
We must commend these police officers and encourage them. Other stations should also be as creative and devise means that will help to improve their image in the people's eyes.
This is especially important if the scourge of crime which the citizens are aiming to get rid of is to be helped. The citizens in these communities where they see officers trying to forge relation-ships should meet the lawmen half way so that they can help build their communities and ultimately the country into a safe and wonderful place.
