Sixteen persons arrested

Two senior policemen, one with his gun out, tries to restore calm at the building site of the Bahia Hotel, St. Ann, yesterday. Work was halted after workers protested and three persons were shot. - NORMAN GRINDLEY

SIXTEEN PERSONS WERE arrested and charged with breaches of the Solid Waste Act and the Dangerous Drugs Act following a demonstration at the Bahia Principe hotel site in Runaway Bay, St. Ann on Monday, in which three people were shot and injured.

The 16 persons were arrested following the demonstration in which four vehicles belonging to the contractors were damaged and a policeman injured. Four security posts were also destroyed during the incident.

It is reported that the workers were protesting for more pay when they allegedly attacked the guards who tried to quash the protest.

During the incident, the three persons were shot and injured.

The protest spilled on to the Discovery Bay main road which was blocked for several hours by the protesting workers.

The workers also tried to prevent the police from entering the site. It is understood that the policeman was injured during this time.
