THE EDITOR, Madam:
The members of our association heard His Worship The Mayor of Kingston Desmond McKenzie say publicly that he makes it his business from time to time to attend citizens' association meetings.
We used this declaration and took the liberty of inviting him to our monthly association meeting which convenes on third Sundays each month. The first such invitation was in January last year, and on three subsequent occasions, we had a packed hall awaiting the mayor who has not yet arrived. This, despite final confirmation by his chamber staff on each occasion, sometimes only hours before meeting time.
At the ninth hour though, the telephone would ring to say he has declined and one of his letters would follow.
Why is the mayor inflicting so much pain on his own people? For the want of confirmation of land tenure for property under the council's control, will the mayor allow the Jamaica Social Investment Fund and the Ministry of Health to spurn the interest they have already shown in constructing a Health Centre to alleviate the abomination which now exists?
The level of interface with this council and the residents it serves is a cause for concern, especially when Deputy Mayor Lee Clarke told me that to have a K.S.A.C. road considered for fixing, residents must engage and privately fund the engineers' cost for the estimate. Further, that to have a pot hole fixed, the request must be put in writing, rather than by way of telephone calls.
These are new developments and I challenge the council to make public confirmation on these two issues.
I am, etc.,
Derrick Simon
