The deaths of Shauna-Kay Legister and Sheneca Shakes have clearly affected the lives of the residents of Town Head in Westmoreland.
Before the deaths of the girls, residents said nothing much happened and no one knew of the community. Since the deaths of the girls last year, the community has been touched and everyone is convinced the killer is still living amongst them.
"Before last year nothing much happened here," said Windell Dawson, chairman of the Sheneca Shakes and Shauna-Kay Legister Foundation.
"The most that has happened is the odd wounding matter and two fatal motor vehicle accidents a long time ago. So this has touched everyone," he said. Sheneca Shakes, nine, and her friend, Shauna-Kay Legister, eight, were found raped and murdered in a cane field in the Town Head district in Burnt Savannah, Westmoreland, on June 30 last year.
Reports are that the girls went to school on Wednesday morning but left during devotion to take a dress to Shauna-Kay's sister for the school's graduation that was set to take place the following day.
It is suspected that the girls had taken a short cut located directly behind the school to go to the sister's house nearby. The girls reportedly left the dress at the house and headed back for school but never made it. When the girls did not return home after school that evening, Shauna-Kay's mother, Shernette Clarke, called the police.
"It really sad to know that the killer may be among us and that they could do something so bad," said another member of the community.
Residents said so far there has been speculation as to who is responsible but the police have so far not arrested anyone in connection with the murders.
Residents said the week of activities to remember the girls was well supported and that they turned out to show their respect as the girls were well known in the area.
"We only hope dem ketch di killer soon but we a hear seh is a young bwoy do it but we nuh know wha fi believe," said another resident.
