Bank on Pure Mud

BY JIMMIE, Star Racing Writer

TRAINER DWIGHT CHEN'S SEATTLE'S GIRL has looked far better at exercise and should land tomorrow's 1600-metre Owen Silvera Memorial Cup for Open Allowance runners.

The American-bred four-year-old filly failed to cope with topweight against the colts last time out when outbattled by DON LIMPIO and CHADMAN in a driving finish at 1800 metres.

Chen has since taken SEATTLE'S GIRL to task at exercise and must have been pleased with a pair of six-furlong bullet gallops, 1:13.1 on each occasion, behind a 59.4 five-furlong split in her last spin on Sunday morning.

Champion jockey Brian Harding will partner SEATTLE'S GIRL, replacing absent Trevor Simpson, with whom he's tied on 41 winners atop the riders' standings.

Simpson, who starts a two-day suspension next Wednesday, has skipped this weekend's meet and could find himself well off the lead when he returns from his ban.

Even though SEATTLE'S GIRL will again carry 57.0 kilos, she packs too much speed for the likes of DIGI N' JIGGY, who's also a strong pacer, but is stepping up in class from Overnight Allowance.

JACKPOTS AT $2M

With Simpson out of action, the day should be dominated by Harding and Charles Hussey, who led the early standings, but has since been relegated to second on 39 wins.

Harding should also boot home Philip Feanny-trained PURE MUD in the 1400-metre fifth race.

The American-bred filly showed her preference for a distance of ground in her third start last month when she chased home stable-mate SUN TANNED TOES at 1820 metres and should have no problems putting away short-running rivals in the second Pick-9 race.

PURE MUD is a five-star banker for the Pick-9, which has its guaranteed $1m Pick-9 on offer, starting at the fourth of 12 races.

The Super-6, which produced a flood of winners last Saturday, 147 combinations each worth $14,457, will have two bets, Races One to Six and Seven to Twelve, each with $500,000 guaranteed mini-mum payouts.

Hussey should boot home winners of the first two Pick-6 races, JET POWER and INSATIABLE, both trained by his brother Percy.

JET POWER, a two-year-old filly, faces the starter for the fourth time and is by far the speediest and most experienced of six juveniles sprinting 600 metres straight.

Hussey's filly has kept better company and even though she has been training extensively in the pool, looked well enough on Sunday morning when galloping three furlongs in 36.4 out of the straight.

INSATIABLE is down in class after finishing fourth behind EXPLOSIVE PEAK at the Overnight Allowance level and should repeat his April 26 win among Claiming company at 1200 metres.
