WHILE MANY YOUNG boys opt to pass their time idly, one 13-year-old is sowing the seeds for a brighter future - literally.
Even at his young age, Anthony Nelson, a first former at the Port Morant Primary and Junior High School in St.Thomas, has exhibited admirable entrepreneural skills. Ever since he was physically able to, Anthony has been helping his father plant peppers, tomatoes and carrots. The responsibility of getting these products sold, is solely his, and the profit from his vending, goes towards his education. He told THE WEEKEND STAR that he has been selling in the capital, Morant Bay, for almost a year.
Anthony lives with his father, who is a farmer, and two siblings, and because he is willing to do things for himself, he makes life easier for his parents.
COVER SCHOOL EXPENSES
He told THE WEEKEND STAR that he makes between $3000 - $4500 on a Saturday - money that is used to cover all his school related expenses. He added however, that he was not working presently because the crop was over. But Anthony's independent spirit does not end here. He also works on an apple farm and told THE WEEKEND STAR , "mi carry water fi water di supp'm dem and mi spray dem wid chemical."
Anthony told THE WEEKEND STAR that he likes what he does because "it good, it a go mek mi nuh steal, cause mi have fi mi self." He also believes that "children should help their parents instead a livin offa dem." He says he wants to become an engineer or a bank manager and also said that he loves to draw.
He says he wants to be an inspiration to both the old and the young and to help people to realise that they can do for themselves, instead of always relying on others.
