36 children killed in almost two years

AS PART OF the hunt for child killers, today THE STAR continues its series geared towards informing the public about the unsolved murders.

A reward totalling $100,000 is being offered for the arrest and charge of person or persons responsible for the death of our children.

Between January 1, 2004 and December 31, 2005, 36 children were killed in Jamaica and of this number, 27 have been cleared up.

Among the murders that have been solved are: Devonte Lawla, Shantel Miller, Moesha Lee, five and twins Tyrone and Tyreek Henry, four. Other cases that have been solved by the police are Quwayne Ross, Shaneal Raffington, Shadece Williams, Stacy-Ann Gardener, 13 and Dwayne Davidson 15.

Lawla, three, was killed during a drive-by in January 2004. He was killed when gunmen fired on a group of people in the Olympic Gardens area. In that case, two men were later arrested and charged in connection with the murder.

In the murders of Moesha Lee, five and twins Tyrone and Tyreek Henry four, two men were arrested and charged. The three children were killed in September 2004 when gunmen torched their home in Portmore, St. Catherine. Their deaths at the time was blamed on a gang feud.

In January 2005, Tevin Parchment was shot and killed with his sister in Gordon Town, St. Andrew. Since then, the men said to be involved in the attack have died either at the hands of their cronies or were killed by the police.

Later in that same month, Shadece Williams, four, Stacy-ann Gardener, 13 and Dwayne Davidson 15 were killed in their house in Kilancholly, St. Mary. The children's uncle was later arrested and charged.

Another murder which has been cleared up by the police is that of Shantel Miller who was killed in June, 2005. The 11-year-old girl was killed along with her grandfather and uncle in Spanish Town, St. Catherine. Since then, the suspect involved in the murder was shot and killed.

In the death of Shaneal Raffington who was shot and killed in August 2005 in Grants Pen, St. Andrew, one man has been held. One man was also held in the murder of three-month-old Quwayne Ross who was killed on Jacques Road in September last year.

In addition, several of the deaths were domestic disputes where other teens or family members were responsible for the death of their peers.
