STEPPING UP THE game was the aim at Day Two of JCDC's Traditional Folk Forms Jamaica Festival 2006 at the Little Theatre. However, Clonmel Cultural Club and Clonmel Primary and Junior High from St. Mary took home top spots in all categories.
Wednesday, Day Two of the finals of the folk forms, saw a packed turn out of excited hopefuls and an enthusiastic audience. Teachers could be heard giving advice to their anxious students who all wanted to carry home gold. Students brought well-prepared and organised pieces. Compared to Day One not much could be faulted in most performances as almost every group was on par with each other.
AIMS
One of the aims of Jamaica Cultral Development Commission's festival is to keep alive all the traditions. Which was evident throughout as youngsters danced the Ettu, Tambu, Dinki Mini and more. There were some schools that created new items introducing new songs for the ring games that, although new, were still on par with older songs.
Performances that stood out came from schools such as Zion Hill Primary from Manchester. Their all-boys group was a true delight to watch. Their ring game performance was unique and inventive. The boys depicted being at play by doing cricket, football and singing "We just can't be Chris Gayle". As awards were being presented, Joyce Campbell, consultant on traditional folk forms commended their performance.
Clonmel Primary and Junior High as well as Clonmel Cultural Group stole countless scenes. They performed in almost every category and won in every one they entered. They were obviously well prepared and changed their style for every act. What assisted them was their strong backing band.
