Hard Knox - CONTRIBUTED
IF YOU THOUGHT 'Pimpin ain't easy', you should trying making it in the music business.
For Hard Knox, it has been nothing but an uphill challenge, but they say they are determined to get over their boulder. Cousins Rohan Johnson and Shawn Williams (Hard Knox) both grew up in Buff Bay, Portland.
According to Johnson (Hard), he grew up in a family which instilled good values and attitudes in him. He attributes this to the fact that he is the youngest of eight siblings. He said it was while at Buff Bay Primary that he discovered his love for music. "I realised I was drawn to music, especially those done by DJs. In no time I found myself imitating them," he said.
Johnson would use his lunch break at school to entertain his schoolmates. There, the beats came from desktops and chalkboards.
Johnson went on to high school where both he and Williams (Knox) discovered they shared a love for music. At first, the two went head-to-head in regular clashes. They then decided to form a duet called 'Scaring Twins.'
"Wi humble still, wi keep it going. We don't try to rush tings. That separate us from others," Willaims told THE STAR.
They entered the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission popular song contest in 1996 but failed to make it through the first round. They met producer Sequence in Kingston, who encouraged them to change their name to 'Hard Knox.' The name symbolises their hard knock fight. Hard Life, Gal Hunt and Hot Gal are some of the singles they have worked on.
Hard Knox says to look out for them in years to come. "Ten years from now we will be at the bigger award shows," said Williams.
