'DEAD LIKE A dog' is a common expression for a human's particularly painful passing or simply one that is simply commonplace.
However, it is not a simple matter for the residents of Gosford Road, St. Catherine, who have to be dealing with the mass deaths of a dozen animals, apparently through poison.
As THE STAR reported yesterday, the residents are concerned not only that the deed was done ahead of an intended robbery, but also for the dogs themselves, which were treasured and loved pets.
What is of concern, though, is that the police seem to be taking the matter lightly, based on the response to THE STAR when enquiries were made into the matter. It would seem that even if they are not going to be mounting a manhunt for the dog killers, at least it should be taken as an indication that something is afoot. This is especially so as it was reported that previously, dogs had been poisoned in Fairview Park, Spanish Town, before a motor car was stolen.
Intelligence is a major part of the fight against crime and it is much better to take steps to prevent a crime than hunt down the perpetrators with guns and handcuffs after the deed has been done. While we do not expect the police to stake out Gosford Road, it would not be too much to step up patrols in the area, even for a few weeks until the dogs are replaced.
We are sure it would do the residents a world of good to have a few 'rat patrols' going until they can have their canine crew replaced.
