JAMAICA'S BOXING TEAM returned to the island yesterday after capturing four medals: one gold, two silver and a bronze, as well as a creditable fourth-place finish, in the just concluded Caribbean Amateur Boxing Championships hosted in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.
The team of seven boxers saw featherweight Nicholas Walters defeating Paul Lewis of Guyana in his final to capture the gold. Walters was named the Most Outstanding Boxer of the tournament and the best boxer for the senior division.
Welterweight Ricardo Brown and heavyweight Gerrington Richards also had opportunities to carry home gold medals but were defeated by Leon Carlton of Guyana and Anderson Emanuel of Barbados in their respective finals and had to settle for the silver.
Jamaica's bronze medal came from Camion Goldson, a debutante at the championships, who had a third-place finish in his junior welterweight division.
Jamaica was one of 16 countries to participate in the tournament and their 19-point performance placed them fourth in the Championships behind Barbados, who finished with 33 points, followed by Guyana (30) and Trinidad and Tobago (24).
Doreen Brown, general secretary of the Jamaica Boxing Board and manager of the team to the championships lauded the team's performance.
"The team performed very well. We carried seven boxers and won four medals so although the team didn't have quantity we had the quality," she said.
